Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe appears to be expanding his lead in the race for Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party's presidential election in September, as many party factions have decided to support him.

Three candidates are expected to contest the election: Mr Abe, Foreign Minister Taro Aso and Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki. The election will be held to choose a successor to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
