A typhoon has left nine people dead and one missing in southwestern Japan. Weather officials say typhoon Shanshan, the 13th of this season, is moving north-northeast over the Sea of Japan.
A man said, "I've never heard such a terrible sound, and it was so dark."
In Nobeoka, Miyazaki Prefecture, a man was killed when gusting winds knocked a store shelf onto him. And in Fukuoka Prefecture, a man died when a two-ton container fell on him, also in the strong winds.
More than 110 houses were totally destroyed or seriously damaged, and a train was overturned, apparently by a tornado.
