What are the designs on the covers of Greek and Japanese Passports?

published: Dec 14, 2005

It is the national emblem of Greece and consists of a blue escutcheon with a white cross totally surrounded by two laurel branches.

The white cross refers to Orthodox Church and the laurel was in ancient Greece the symbol of victory, wisdom and poetry.
The emblem was accepted in 1975 and designed by engraver Kostas Grammatopoulos.

It is the Imperial Seal of Japan and is called "Kiku No Gomon" which, literally, means "Noble Symbol of Chrysanthemum" or "Imperial Seal of Chrysanthemum".
The Imperial Seal is used by members of the Japanese Imperial family. As of 2005, there is no law that specifies what is the National Seal of Japan. As a custom, the Imperial Seal is treated as if it were the National Seal.
